Questions
Common questions about Provident Fund
When does PF become compulsory for my company?
Once your establishment reaches the headcount set in the Code on Social Security. The Code no longer limits PF to listed industries, so headcount is what matters. You can also opt in earlier with the agreement of most of your employees. Once PF applies, it continues even if headcount later falls. Share your headcount history with us and we will confirm the exact date PF applied to you.
We should have registered earlier. What happens now?
Register now and regularise the past period. Late payment attracts interest and damages, so waiting only adds to the cost. We work out the arrears, plan the payments with you and help you respond if the EPFO raises an assessment.
Did PF change when the Labour Codes came in?
The EPF Act, 1952 has been folded into the Code on Social Security, 2020, in force since 21 November 2025. The EPF, Pension and EDLI schemes continue. The big change is the definition of wages: if excluded allowances add up to more than 50% of total pay, the excess counts as wages for PF. We review your salary structure so contributions are correct.
Are we responsible for PF of a contractor's workers?
It can come back to you. The Code makes the employer liable for contributions of workers engaged through a contractor, with a right to recover them from the contractor. Check every month that your contractors have actually deposited PF for the people on your site. We do this as part of a contractor audit.
Can you help an employee with a PF withdrawal or transfer?
Yes, for employees of the companies we serve. We file withdrawals, advances, transfers, pension and EDLI claims online and follow them up. Many delays come from mismatched KYC details, so we check those first.
